Arctic pancake ice, Svalbard, Norway

At sea, Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway (April 2024)
This image was taken on the Svalbard Spring Cruise trip organised by Natures Images and led by Danny Green. A seven-day cruise was undertaken aboard the small expedition ship MV Freya with the expertise of two guides, Yves Adams and Pieter-Jan D'Hondt.
The formation of pancake ice requires the presence of waves. In the Arctic, pancake ice formation appears to be increasing and it is speculated that climate change is a possible cause due to a greater sea area (less ice coverage) being exposed to the action of wind (see here).
