Barrow's Goldeneye (male), Ásbyrgi, Iceland

Botnstjörn, Ásbyrgi canyon, Vatnajökull (Jökulsárgljúfur) National Park, Norðurland eystra, Iceland (June 2014)
The male Barrow's Goldeneye is distinguished from the male Common Goldeneye by having a head with a purplish instead of a green sheen (when seen in good light), crescent-shaped white facial patches instead of circular ones, a blacker back and smaller bill. Lake Mývatn, to the south and west of Ásbyrgi canyon, is the only place in Europe where Barrow's Goldeneyes breed. There were a couple of drakes on Botnstjörn, a small lake at the end of Ásbyrgi canyon.
