Close-up of a Kingfisher with a fish

River Salwarpe, near Wychbold, Worcestershire (September 2013)
Wild bird photographed from a hide rented from Mark Hancox / Nature Photography Hides. Kingfishers are attracted to a suspended tank containing fish bait. A variety of interchangeable perches could be placed at different angles around the tank. Here, the Kingfisher has successfully caught a fish and has returned to the selected perch. This was the only time this happened during the day. Usually, the bird tended to fly upriver and land on an overhanging branch before eating the fish. The hide day starts at around 8:00 AM and Kingfishers appear within the first 30 minutes of entering the hide. This shot was taken during one of the first visits when the light levels were still relatively low hence an ISO setting of 3200 was needed.
Also known as Common/European/Eurasian Kingfisher.
