This close-up image shows the characteristics of the adult California Gull: red and black marks on a yellow bill with a red gape while the eye has a dark iris surrounded by a red orbital ring. The adult California Gull is thus easily distinguished from an adult Herring Gull which has a pale iris with an orange-yellow orbital ring together with a yellow gape.
