Also known as Willow Grouse, Willow Ptarmigan.The Red Grouse is of the subspecies scotica which is native to the UK and Ireland.
It is difficult to get a good image of a flying Red Grouse. When flushed, the bird tends to fly rapidly away from you, giving a rear-end view, before dropping down into the heather and disappearing from view. Rarely, as in this case, the bird may turn across you at some distance allowing an acceptable shot to be obtained.
