Red-footed Booby in flight, Kilauea Point, Kauai

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, Kauai, Hawaiian Islands, USA (September 2015)

Red-footed Boobies are very commonly observed at Kilauea Point; they nest in trees and shrubs surrounding the Refuge. This bird is probably immature rather than a morph; it has some brown plumage of the juvenile and the white body of an adult. Also, the bill has a black tip rather the complete blue/pink one of the adult; the juvenile has a completely dark bill. This image was taken from the end of the Point at around 11:00 am. The Refuge is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The entrance fee is $5. Outside of opening hours, the Point and the Lighthouse together with circling sea birds can be viewed from near the gate.
