Waterfall on blue iceberg, Jokulsarlon, Iceland - Iceland
Jökulsárlón, Iceland (June 2017)

This image was taken during a trip organised by Natures Images and led by Danny Green and Paul Hobson. Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon containing icebergs calved from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. The icebergs range in colour from white, grey, blue through to black; some are transparent and glass-like. The blue icebergs contain the oldest and most compressed / most dense ice which reflects blue light while absorbing other colours. In this image, a large iceberg has collided with a jam of others at the mouth of the lagoon. Following the collision, the iceberg rolled and a temporary waterfall was created. The icebergs slowly thaw until they are released from the jam and then they float out to sea where they break up into small ice blocks which are washed onto the black volcanic sands of Diamond Beach.
