Brown Bear (male) in the forest at Martinselkonen

Martinselkonen, Suomussalmi, Finland (June 2013)
This photo was taken on a Nature Images Finland Bears trip led by Mark Sisson.
This photograph was taken at 4:45 am in the forest; sunset was at midnight and sunrise at about 2:30 am. Generally Bear activity declined substantially around 11:00 pm when all the food had been eaten. After this time, only an occasional Bear passed through and didn't linger. This was a good time to catch a few hours of sleep! Photographers remain in the hides overnight until about 7:00 am the next morning, having entered them soon after 4:00 pm the previous evening. Usually female bears with cubs retreated out of sight when a male appeared. This male looked to have been in a few fights as part of one ear was missing. However, no fights between adults were seen during the trip as there was plenty of food for all.
